What is consciousness, our awareness of the world around and ourselves. Subjective because it exists in your mind: all your own. Its thought that decreases in light impair functioning of biological clocks, influencing nt release. Stages of sleep: sleep is more complicated than simply being unconscious for 8 hours, sleep consists of several stages define by patterns of brain activity. Stage 1 sleep: very light sleep, contains theta waves, may experience bizarre images or sudden muscle jerks, the tetris study. Stage 2 sleep: brain waves slow down, eeg show sleep spindles and k complexes, body relaxes, heart slows, body temperature decreases, eye movements decrease. Stage 3 &4 sleep: we observe delta waves, necessary to feel rested after sleep. Alcohol suppresses delta sleep: deepest sleep, rem sleep [rapid eye movement sleep] (where dreams usually occur, a lot of i(cid:374)teresti(cid:374)g stuff starts to happe(cid:374) . Influx of csf: memory consolidation, release of growth hormone.
