Document Summary
Panic disorder: symptoms: sudden occurrence of multiple psychological and physiological symptoms that contribute to a feeling of stark terror. Many people with agoraphobia are not frightened of public places in themselves; instead, they are afraid of having a panic attack in a public place or around strangers who might view them with disdain or fail to help them. An occasional episode is not enough for a diagnosis of panic disorder- the individual also has to experience significant dread and anxiety about having another attack. Panic attacks may be traceable to the fear of fear itself. Obsessive compulsive disorder (ocd: symptoms: repetitive, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and ritualistic behaviors (compulsions) that are intended to fend off those thoughts, result in significant interference into a person"s ability to function. Anxiety plays a role in this disorder because the obsessive thoughts typically produce anxiety, and the compulsive behaviors are performed to reduce it. Increased serotonin inhibits the caudate nucleus and reduces symptoms of ocd.
