Lecture 60: mood disorders: at the mercy of emotions, mood disorders- mental disorders that have mood disturbance as their predominant feature--take two main forms: depression and bipolar disorder. Symptoms: severely depressed mood (>2 weeks) with feelings of worthlessness and lack of pleasure, lethargy, sleep and appetite disturbances: dysthymia- similar to major depression but less severe and lasting for at least 2 years. High heritability that varies as a function of severity. Dysregulated levels of norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine (can be regulated by prozac/zoloft) Reduced activity in left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and increased activity in right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex: psychological factors. Bipolar disorder: symptoms: unstable emotional condition characterized by cycles of abnormal, persistent high mood (mania) and low mood (depression) Manic episodes- extreme euphoria, physical energy, rapid thoughts and speech.
