When using scales in research, make sure there are options that accurately portray what people want to express. Select participants purposefully for bias or allow self-selection. A biased sample obtained via self-selection or a deliberate strategy. Online website polls are notorious for this problem because people have to visit a particular website in the first place, and decide to click the button for the poll. Thus, they select themselves and they likely have an interest in the topic. What if i wanted to know how many people in the us support a particular politician, but i only asked people attending a rally for that politician (or people attending a rally for an opposing political party?) Assumes a straight line between data points.
