To study the effects of the situation on a person, we must first understand the person. The self relates to basically every topic in social psychology (social cognition, motivation, attitudes, stereotyping, aggression) Engagement w/ the self in a non thoughtful manner. We are both influenced by and attempt to influence other people. Us forcing ourselves to do or not do things. One"s currently activated self-concept (can change from situation to situation) Want to know that how we view the world is accurate. Want to know that we are good/doing well. Self-assessment: want accurate feedback about the self. Humans are not the only species w/ a sense of self. Great apes recognize themselves, but only when socialized. 22) red-dot studies: you can tell if the organism has a traditional sense of self if they look in the mirror and touch/try to take off their red dot from their forehead. Interdependent self: closely connected to social context.
