Document Summary

Reading: do mothers have a disadvantage when it comes to finding a job. Gave undergraduate students two different, equal resumes with the only differences being a mother vs. a nonmother. Study participants were told that california based start up communications dept wanted to hire new employees. Results indicated that motherhood was not good for being hired for a job. In the men, we saw the opposite pattern as fathers were more likely to be hired. Mother could be a negative effect on her effort in the work place. Jobs were randomly assigned to men and women. Measured call back by parental status vs non parental status. Fathers were called back at a higher rate. One of the drawbacks: there is most likely less discrimination in lower level work places. Second study is done in only one small area. Doesn"t get totally at discrimination because it only touches the hiring process. Binary- assumes male and female categories are exhaustable.
