Document Summary
Define eliot freidman typologies of legitimacies and discuss how it relates to the concept of disability. Freidman"s typologies of legitimacies describe how disease or illness can produce one of three types of legitimacy. The first is illegitimate, which includes some exemptions from role responsibilities, privileges, and stigma. The second is conditional legitimacy, which is temporary exemption from role responsibilities and are advised to get well. The third is unconditional legitimacy, which is permanent and unconditional exemption from role responsibilities. A disability is defined as loss of ability due to impairment, which is the loss of anatomical function. I think different types of disabilities can fall under these different typologies, depending on the severity of the disability. For example, a quadriplegic would fall under conditional legitimacy, while someone who may have mild carpal tunnel would fall under illegitimate because you would expect that person to still be able to complete some of their role responsibilities.
