Social control- techniques and strategies for preventing deviant behavior in a group or society o o o. Sanctions: penalties and rewards for conduct related to a social norm. Stigmas: negative images that devalue members of social groups. Milgram experiment revealed the extent to which ordinary people will go in response to commands from authority figures. Every social group polices the boundaries of acceptable behavior. But deviance can be dysfuntional too; can reflect: normlessless (anomie, mismatch between norms and means to pursue them. Definitions of deviance reflect the interests of powerful individuals and groups. Member of powerless groups more likely to receive negative sanctions (and sanctions more sever) for the same behavior: differential justice. Focuses on how deviance o o o. Is learned from associates and through social networks reflects symbolic messages about neighborhoods and social groups. Is created by stereotypes and images of social groups (ex. Becoming a marijuana user is a process of social learning)
