Poverty: standard of living that is below the minimum level considered decent and reasonable by society. The cost of providing an adequate diet multiplied by 3. Families with income below the poverty level are considered poor. The government feels that of income is used for food. Minimum wage in 2015 = . 25 (michigan . 15 v. federal . 25) If you"re above the poverty line, you cannot apply for any government aid, like welfare, they would consider that sufficient, even though it is probably not. About 36% of the poor are children. Over 60% of the poor are women. Largest percentage = african americans and hispanic americans. Approximately 50% of african americans and hispanic american female headed households are poor. 22% of american children live below the poverty level.
