Socialization: the process by which a person acquires a sense of self, identity; learns expectations of society that will hold the individual accountable. Socialization is important because this allows people to know where they fit into society and how they contribute to the whole. Agents of socialization: family*, school, friends, tv/movies/books (media) Authoritative: listen to children"s input while enforcing the preset rules. Permissive: high levels of support but inconsistent enforcement of rules. Authoritarian: high levels of social control but low levels of emotional support, they don"t feel guilty about doing things away from their parents because there"s no emotional attachment. When they"re away from the family, they rebel. Working class - structured, obedience to authority. Middle class - more concern of motivations for children"s behavior.
