Provides critique of inequality under capitalism and how to change it. C-m-c = commodity-money-commodity: m-c-m" = money-commodity-more money. Commodities are purchased to sell, not to use: surplus-value = difference between money invested and larger amount of money from selling a commodity (profit margin) Ii: capitalism necessarily involves alienation and exploitation. Dialectic materialism: hegelian dialectic: history progresses through a series of contradictions thesis, antithesis and synthesis, contradiction at the heart of capitalism = class conflict between bourgeoisie and proletariat. Bourgeoisie: own means of production: marx was interested in reciprocal relationship between structures and actors in the past, present and future (macro and micro approach) Historical in his thinking: connection of large scale structures and individuals. Alienation: sociological analysis: marx critiqued the structures of capitalism rather than the greed of the individual capitalists. B/c system makes them this way: what remains hidden is that political powers have been transformed into economic relations.
