Many languages use a writing system to represent speech. Some writing systems represent words = logographic: chinese, need to learn many characters. Some writing systems represent speech sounds = alphabet: symbols used to write speech sounds, some languages write only consonants (hebrew, some languages write both consonants and vowels. In english, 26 letters in the alphabet with many accepted letter/spelling variations for same sound. Their, there, they"re: orthography and phonetics. English speakers have a love-hate relationship with spelling. English orthography is said to be deep or opaque. Spanish, russian, italian and many others have shallow orthography. (one sound, one spelling) Designed to represent uniquely all the sounds found in all the languages of the world. One symbol = one sound: same spelling, different sound.
