SPHHRNG 3320 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Prosodic Unit, Fundamental Frequency, Statistical Hypothesis Testing
Document Summary
Stress, timing rhythm, tempo are suprasegmental aspects of speech. The prefix supra means above, beyond, or to transcend; the suprasegmental aspects of speech affect an entire utterance. Another term for these characteristics of speech is prosody. Set of reduced (unstressed) vowels, i. e. vowel quality associated with stress. 4 to 5 syllables between stressed syllables. No lexical stress or lexical stress not associated with syllable duration. Number of syllables between stressed syllables can be large. As listeners we don"t tend to think about pauses between words, phrases, and sentences in connected speech. What can pauses mean: the speaker is taking a breath, the speaker is hesitating ( um ah , can also alert a listener to the speaker"s intent. Ambiguity: woman without her man is savage, pardon impossible to be executed. More ambiguity: did you see the girl with a telescope, i gave her cat food, the hostess greeted the girl with a smile, bill or sam and bob will leave.
