How can we nd developmentally important genes out of the 17,00 genes in. Ex: a common feature of insects is segmentation. A bicoid wild type plays a role in making anterior parts of the insect body: a nanos mutant creates a larva with only anterior segments. A nanos wild type plays a role in making posterior segments: speci c localization patterns of the bicoid and nanos mrna and proteins support observations of mutant embryos. Friday, december 2, 2016: process of making eggs. Maternal-effect genes: a gene that is expressed by the mother that affects the phenotype of the offspring, typically through the composition or organization of the oocyte. Mom"s role to make mrna and store it in eggs: some of the mrna is highly localized like bicoid and nanos and others are not like hunchback and caudal. Only after fertilization is the mrna translated into proteins. 3" utr (untranslated region) is used for mrna localization.
