Language is : a collection of symbols, letters, or words with arbitrary meanings that are governed by rules and used to communicate. Signs produce meaning in interaction with receivers: ex: stop signs. Codes systems into which signs are organized: verbal and nonverbal (cid:1) Rule #1 phonology the way sounds are created to form words: ghoti. Rule #3 semantics the meanings of words on the basis of their relationship to one another and to elements in the environment: you are a cool, i would like a cool drink. Rule #4 pragmatics how language is used in practice: how are you doing, how"s it going, this is called phatic communication. Sapir-whorf hypothesis perception of reality is determined by thoughts and thoughts are limited by language. Language shapes reality: jobs, location mom has you dry dishes you grab a towel, dish towel, t-towel. Connotative meaning personal: dough head (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1, dumb shit (cid:1) Language moves us to more specific descriptions.
