HLTH 2901 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Sensory Neuron, Subcutaneous Tissue, Dermis
Document Summary
(ch 3) the body and its age changes. 8:45 am: studying the physiological process of aging. Cross-sectional studies: looking at different groups at the same time. Cohort effect - groups are different and may affect the outcome of the study. Survivor effect - those who have survived may be different than those who have died. Researchers gather a sample of individuals from different age groups and collect data on the presence of a certain trait. Ex: to find out whether bones become thinner with age, the bone density of young people, middle aged people, and older people might be measured. The statistical methods would be used to compare the three groups. If the researchers found that the youngest group had the highest bone density, the middle group had less, the eldest group had the lowest, they might conclude that bone mass decreases with age. Another example might be the loss of height.
