Document Summary

Math 1101, chapter 1 lesson 1 notes and activities. Numbers provide us with a precise means for describing, representing, and reasoning about quantities. A small shepherd boy was responsible for taking 23 sheep to pasture each day. These sheep would graze freely all day, and in the evening the boy was to round them all up and drive them home. Unfortunately, the boy could not count, so he had difficulty each day deciding whether he had found all the sheep before returning home. You would have to put ribbon on the sheep at night and when they leave in the morning you would take the ribbon off. When they would come back home, each sheep would get a ribbon again. If you would have ribbon left after the sheep are in then there are still sheep in the field. Roman numerals: instead of 5 tally marks, romans would use i, ii, iii, iv, v,vi,vii, viii, ix, x.
