Americans no longer talk to each other, they entertain each other. Families had shared listening experiences with radio and this moved forward to television. Television as a distraction or complete novelty. With radio you could do other things while listening. With television you had to watch it and divert your senses. The traditional circular family choreography becomes semi-circular. Anders refers to this setup as the negative dinner table . Half of all u. s. households had television sets by 1955. Fcc adopts liberal licensing policy from 1950. 1950s: talk shows and sitcoms became distinct tv genres. Television becomes the leading mass medium in the second half of the 20th century. One of the most indicting and far-sighted critiques of this political impact of tv on the political process was expressed by the german-jewish philosopher.
