NUTR 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 42: Collard Greens, Osteopenia, Bone Density
Document Summary
Osteoporosis, bone breaks down faster than it can repair itself. Osteopenia, reduced bone mass, less severe than osteoporosis. Calcium represents 40% of all the minerals present in the body. 99% of calcium in the body is used for bone. Hormonally controlled actions regulate blood calcium concentration. Low blood calcium doesn t typi(cid:272)ally (cid:272)ause (cid:271)y low intake, (cid:271)ut (cid:271)y kidney disease, hormonal abnormalities. 12 million americans > 50 currently have osteoporosis: most are women. 2 million bone fractures per year in the usa. Trabecular bone, the less dense, more open structure bone found in inner layer of bones. Cortical bone, the compact or dense bone found on the outer surfaces of bone. Loose bone: dowagers hump (kyphosis), end up with fractures, damage. Osteoporosis, the body taps into bone when blood calcium is low. Influence of genes: genetic inheritance, risks may vary by race and ethnicity.
