August 30, 2016: the ig explosion and reasons for it. The ig explosion happened in the 60s-70s. All these groups have some kind of presence in dc. In 1920, 1 major corporation had an office in dc. Almost all trade association has moved to dc, or a md/va suburb. K street is, historically, where the lobbying offices are. Since the 70s pacs have turned into super pacs. Almost all the lawyers in dc are there to do interest group work. Registered lobbyists have increased as well, however small decrease in the past five years. This does not include pollsters, lawyers, etc. Estimated almost 100k people actually working in lobbying. Ig explosion has a lot to do with the successes of social movements in the 60s (civil. Showed what a group being organized, visible can do. Public interest groups- represent broad, unorganized publics. Ralph nader, forms public citizen, citizen health, other nader groups.
