Personality: unique pattern of enduring thoughts, feeling and actions that characterize a person. Trained as a medical doctor in late 1800s. Libido: psychic energy that surrounds like instincts. Pleasure principle: i have all these needs and i need it now. Uses defense mechanisms to prevent anxiety or guilt. Repression: pushing away undesirable feelings back into the unconsciousness. Rationalization: make an excuse to explain something unacceptable. Projection: transferring something you are experiencing that is uncomfortable and you transfer it to something else. Reaction formation: when you think something is an acceptable, you do the exact opposite. Sublimation: comforting a unacceptable way, to socially acceptable. Mad at boss = take it out on the roommate. Compensation: compensating/ counting/ making up something real or fake. Boys: oedipal complex: started to love mom. Learned patterns of thinking in guiding behavior. Current focus is on changes in cognition and expectations ad well as learned. Externals expect to be control led by outside forces.
