Document Summary

Generalizability- extent that your results can be applied to another population. Representative sampling: sample must reflect the group"s characteristics. (this is the sampling you want in your experiment. ) Random sampling: not the same as random assignment. Biased sampling: convenience samples and research is often done on samples of college psychology students. All research is guided by ethical standards on humans and animals. The institutional review boards (irb) makes sure that all the experiments are done ethically. ~measures of central tendency include a single score that represents a set of scores. Mean: average of a distribution, distorted by atypical scores. Normal curve/ bell curve: scores on an aptitude test tend to form a bell curve. The mean, median and mode are all almost identical. ~measures of variation reveal similarity or diversity in scores. Standard deviation: computed measure of how much scores vary around the mean scores. Skewed distribution: you have really high numbers compared to the mode and median.
