PSY 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Biofeedback, Preconscious, Circadian Rhythm
Document Summary
Medical definition of consciousness: awareness to demonstrate any ability to recall an experience. Psychological definition: awareness of self, bodily sensations, thoughts and environment. ~ helps us to adapt to changing environment. ~ provides an unified representation of the world. Principle that information is often simultaneously processed on separate conscious (explicit, know that it is being processed) and unconscious (implicit) ex. walking around. Perceptions, memory, attitudes and other cognitions are affected. Blindsight awareness: condition in which a person can respond to a visual stimulus without consciously experiencing it. Biofeedback training can help provide some control. Current concept: unperceived mental activity that influences conscious thought. Top down processing- when you have a model, and process the model consistently. Bottom up processing- make meaning of model. Focusing conscious awareness on a particular stimulus. Processing many aspects of a problem simultaneously: naturally your brain can do many functions at the same time. Failing to see visible objects when attention is directed elsewhere.
