Obsessions and compulsions: obsessions are recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges or images that are intrusive and unwanted that cause anxiety or distress. Attempts are made to ignore, suppress, or neutralize them in some way: compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that are performed in response to an obsession or rules that must be applied rigidly. Behaviors are performed to reduce the anxiety. However the behaviors are not connected to the obsession in any way: note: compulsive gambling and eating are not considered compulsions. They are pleasurable; not designed to just reduce anxiety. Preoccupation with physical defects that are not observable to others. Compulsive behavior in response to the concerns. Results in accumulation that equals clutter (or intervention by 3rd party) Good, poor, or absent insight, excessive acquisition. Associated features: common themes of obsession and compulsions. Harm: common to avoid triggers of obsessions/compulsions, symptom accommodation. When family members help their partners avoid.
