Document Summary
Deviance: behavior that doesn"t conform to social expectations(norms) Stigma: a mark of social disgrace; separates deviants from others. Deviance is relative: no one is always and everywhere deviant, deviance is socially created, norms change= what"s deviant changes. Doing person blame: frees the system from any blame (government, education, justice, economy) !1: the established order is protcted from criticism, systems of inequality go unexamined and unquestioned. Doing system blame: social problems have systemic and individual origins, equates people to robots (we aren"t!, absolves the individual from responsibility for his/her actions. Why put more focus on system blame: person blame is the prevailing action. Sociology deals with the social determinants of behavior. The tendancy is to blame as an individual: it"s his crime or her fault/problem . Order model: deviance is functional, integral part of all healthy societies, af rms cultural values and norms, de nes and sustains notions of mortality, clari es moral boundaries; brings people together.
