Document Summary
All of these behaviors require symbols or representations of things. The sum of all social behaviors= social structures of groups, organizations, societies. It frees us up to specialize, that is, do things we would not be able to do on our own. We are not free to do everything we would like! Some behaviors are universal across all societies and cultures, but most are not. Sociology is the scientific study of social/patterned/repeated behaviors. Sociology is the study of people and how they think and behave in groups. Core concepts: society- people who share a common culture and live in the same territory (politically). It is somewhat similar to the main culture, but different enough to be readily distinctive: power/influence- the ability of individuals and groups to achieve desired ends, despite resistance from others. Power/ influence can be expressed economically, politically, socially, culturally, or mixed.
