Document Summary
Nutrition- process that a living organism consumes food and uses it for: growth, tissue repair, tissue replacement, elaboration of products. Nutrient- component of diet that supports normal growth, reproduction, lactation or maintenance(energy required for survival) of life: water, proteins/amino acids. Produce 4 kc/g of energy: carbohydrates. Produce 4 kc/g of energy: lipids. Produce 9 kc/g of energy: vitamins, inorganic elements, essential nutrients- required in the diet because body does not produce them, nonessential nutrients- produced in the body. Food- any edible material that provides nutrients for humans. Feed- any edible material that provides nutrients for animals. Feedstuff- any substance made into or used as food/feed. Diet- mixture of feedstuffs used to provide nutrients to animals. Variation in nutrient requirements among species from: different digestive system physiology, selection for traits in species results in genetic changes in quantitative nutrient needs, age of animal, productivity( maintenance of body tissues, work, growth, milk, eggs, pregnancy)
