Fall 1608- instituted military-style discipline in the colony. Forced people to work for their survival- no one received special privileges. He himself traded with indians for food and mapped chesapeake bay. More than 900 settlers came between 1607 and 1609 (cid:498)starving time(cid:499: only 60 people survived the winter. Commercial tobacco cultivation required large amounts of land and labor. Each head of household received 50 acres. Additional 50 acres for each servant they brought.
