Theory is a set of coherent ideas that help explain phenomenon and facilitate predictions: ideas are inherited, composed of supported hypotheses, produce testable hypotheses. Hypothesis is a testable prediction: does not have to be written as and if/then statement, supported- not proven. Adult personality is determined through how we resolve conflicts between the id and superego through each stage. 8 developmental stages: crisis indicates a turning point, not catastrophe, increased vulnerability and potential. Acceptance of the cycle of life, from integration to disintegration. Humility; acceptance of the course of one"s life and unfulfilled hopes. Sense of complexity of life; merging of sensory, logical and aesthetic perception. Sense of complexity of relationships; value of tenderness and loving freely. Caritas, caring for others, and agape, empathy and concern. Existential identity; a sense of integrity strong enough to withstand physical disintegration. Organization and adaptation: organization: tendency to sort information into related, interconnected structures, adaption: adjusting to new environmental demands.
