Stress: external circumstances, cognitive appraisal (evaluation) of circumstances, physiological response. Personal control: belief in one"s ability to control events, mediates experience of stress. Social support: quantity/quality of one"s personal relationships. A negative emotional experience accompanied by predictable biochemical physiological, cognitive, and behavioral changes that are directed either toward altering the stressful event or accommodating to its effects. (baum, 1990). Definitions: stressor - specific event evoking a response, stress reaction response itself; may be cognitive, emotional, behavioral, physiological, stress our relation to the environment in which a stressor is present (distress). Stress is obviously greatly affected by personality and life experience. Stress cont: our body is well-prepared to handle stress. Acute stress vs. chronic stress: determined by person-environment fit , depends on: Whether the individual perceives self as having the resources necessary for handling the event successfully (control). Alarm: elevated heart rate, mobilization of both mind and body.
