Terminal drop hypothesis of swb (gerstof et al. , 2008) Terminal drop: stability followed by gradual decline. Decline often reflects increase in onset of multiple impairments. This decline is related to normative processes that come later in life. Once one age associated problem happens, such as a stroke, multiple others will begin to occur or be noticed. Associated with mortality: satisfaction with life drops approximately 4 years before death. Important to pay attention to life satisfactory by the time an individual reaches 85+. If they aren"t experiencing a high quality of life any more, chances are they are closer to mortality. Due to multiple health deficits (e. g. , hearing, vision, mobility, organ functioning, chronic disease) Autonomy: self-determination vs. concern toward expectations of others, difference of being self-determined and worrying about the expectations of others, )t"s not that they don"t care about others, its that they want to do it on their own.
