Africa is the second largest and second most populous continent in the world. Has over 1000 languages that are spoken across the continent. Mediterranean sea lies to the north, whih separates africa from europe. Atlantic ocean forms the western border of the continent. Sahara desert separates north africa from the rest of the continent. North africa is home to arab countries including: Indian ocean lies to the southeast: senegal, ghana, kenya, south africa, (these are just a few) Many traditions are shared, but cultural practices across africa reflect significant differences. Some of the most prominent empires were: ghana (700-1200, mali (1200-1500, songhai (1350-1600, zimbabwe (1100-1500, benin (1300-1800, kanem-bornu (800-1800) Places like nigeria were coordinated by local chiefs and councils of elders. Girls are initiated into the sande female society. Boys are admitted into the poro male society.
