Document Summary

Plant cells have 3 things that animal cells don"t have: Hypogeal: germination in which the cotyledon is below the ground. In general, broad leaved plants epigeal: germination in which cotyledon is above the ground. Hypogeal emergence: growth point (cotyledons) stay below the soil surface. Epigeal emergence: growth point (cotyledons) is above the soil surface. The above ground portion of the plant: leaves, stem, eventually, inflorescence (flower that becomes the grain) A flattened and expanded lateral growth from the stem. Primary function: photosynthesis: intercepts light, regulates gas exchange. May be an adaptation to the environment. May allow leaf to do another job for the plant: protection (spines, support (tendrils, storage (onion bulb) If stomata are closed during the day, the plant is experiencing water stress. Functions: support branches, leaves, and flowers, transport through vascular system, storage/reproduction in modified stems. Node: part of the stem from which leaves emerge (branch comes off of a stem)
