MGT 365 Lecture 9: Dysfunctions of Conflict
Document Summary
Competitive/win lose goals: parties compete against each other b/c they believe their interdependence is such that goals are in opposition & both cannot simultaneously achieve their objectives, competitive goals lead to competitive processes to obtain goals. Emotionality: tend to become emotionally charged as parties become anxious, irritated, annoyed, angry, or frustrated, emotions overwhelm clear thinking, parties may become increasingly irrational as conflict escalates. Decreased communication: productive communication declines w/ conflict, parties communicate less w/ those who disagree w/ them, parties communicate more w/ those who agree. Communication that does occur is often attempt to defeat, demean, or debunk other"s view. Also done to strengthen one"s own prior arguments. Rigid commitments: parties become locked into positions, as other side challenges them, parties become more committed to own povs. Become less willing to back down for fear of losing face & looking foolish: thinking processes become rigid, parties tend to see issues as simple & (cid:498)either/or(cid:499) rather than as complex & multidimensional.
