ANTH 002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Warren Jeffs, Moe Williams, Kinship Terminology
Document Summary
The titles you give to your kin; how do you name your relatives. Note: anthropologists created this system based on where they saw it first; could apply to anyone in the world. Inuit: based on the nuclear family (parents and kids); obligations are between parents and siblings only; mom/dad/sons/daughters; very small and interdependent; no one else is responsible to help them out. Omaha: patrilineal; parallel cousins are siblings; males on dads side of the family all get titles; grandma would be called wife of grandpa ; moms side of family does not get any titles. Sudanese: double descent; everybody gets titles on both sides of the family but the titles are different per person (states what generation they are and how they are related) The people are fissioning within their own community. Polygamous community split from mormon church. Believe in the power of men; if the men marry enough women and have enough kids they can become gods.
