O horizon: organic layer a few cm. from the surface. A horizon: humus topsoil less recent things in it. B horizon: subsoil that accumulates clay and minerals less organic stuff, lighter in color. C horizon: layer from which soil formation process begins. A lot of times we see this in architecture older buildings buried by newer buildings. Petra site multiple cultures layered on top of each other. El zotz site mayan time periods layered. Specificity of provenience depends on the context in which it is recovered. Looted materials may only be identified to the culture from which they came (if that) Excavated materials provenience will be recorded based on the protocols of the archaeological project. 1st: go to regional level ez means it came from el zotz site. 2nd: different operations dug at the site designates the east group within site. 3rd: sub-operations b is investigations done on top of the pyramid.
