GEOG 001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Hadley Cell, Coriolis Force, Moe Williams
Document Summary
Semi-permanent pressure systems define the general circulation of the atmosphere: the general circulation of the atmosphere may be studied through 2 different models: It greatly simplifies the system by assuming: the earth is covered only in water, the sun is always directly over the equator, the earth does not rotate. Surface flow pattern: air flows form the poles to the equator. Therefore there is a development of high pressure at the surface. This model assumes: the earth is covered in water, the sun remains over the equator, the earth rotates. Three cells develop in each hemisphere: hadley cell, ferrell cell, polar cell. Save focus to only northern hemisphere: the equatorial area is warmed resulting in rising air and the development of low pressure, air converges at 30 latitude and begins to sink. The cells combine regions of sinking air (highs) and regions of rising air (lows: subtropical highs, high pressure centers located at 30 latitude in both hemispheres.
