PHIL 008 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Summa Theologica, Cosmological Argument, Ontological Argument
Document Summary
Or at least we can"t assume that from the start. If some statement is a matter of opinion, then it is either. Or (1) not the sort of statement that could be objectively true or false (2) a statement where there is just as much reason to think it is objectively true as that it is objectively false. This notion of god has a basis in the judeo-christian-islamic tradition. God exists does not seem to fall into the 1st category. We will have to see about the 2nd. Ontology is the part of metaphysics that deals with the most basic kinds of beings. There"s overlap between theology and metaphysics with respect to the question of god"s existence. In metaphysics, though, appeals to scripture and authority do not carry weight. We will stipulate that god means a being that is omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent, and the creator of the world.
