Islam considers man, that is, man in both male and female forms, in himself and in his capacity to stand directly before god and to be his servant (al-"abd) and vicegerent (al-khal fah) on earth. God formed the first man (adam) from clay and breathed into him his spirit. Taught adam the name of all things, and commanded all the angels to bow down to him, which all but satan did. "and when we said to the angels, "prostrate yourself before adam, they fell down, all but ibl s" By pride he demurred, and thus became an unbeliever . Some muslim authorities state that god created eve from adam and others both from the same clay. In either case, god made the companion and complement to eve adam, and the two lived in paradise until they disobeyed god"s order by consuming the fruit of the forbidden tree.
