Document Summary

Natural science: science based chiefly on objective quantitative hypotheses, examples- biology, agronomy, animal science. Physical science: analyzes nature and properties of energy and non-living matter, examples- physics, chemistry, geology. Research questions: very general ideas that direct further observations or hypothesis formation. Hypothesis: testable prediction of what is expected based on your theoretical model. Theory: conceptual framework that explains existing observations and predicts new ones. Examples: reading aloud to dog increases a child"s reading comprehension. Must be (cid:498)falsifiable(cid:499)- using tests it would be possible to get different results to prove the theory untrue. Tests must be repeatable: the scientific method. Study design- methods will depend on what you are looking for. Related variables: increased exercise, strength of bond with pet, social support. Qualitative vs. quantitative studies: both used in human-animal interaction research. Qualitative: seek answers to questions as to how social experience is created and given meaning, theory or hypothesis building.
