Risks of pets on human health: zoonotic disease, allergies/asthma, dog bites, injuries, failure to evacuate in disaster situations. Zoonotic disease- diseases and infections naturally transmitted between vertebrate animals and man (who 1959: examples: rabies, parasites, bartonella, salmonella, 4 components that relate to spread of zoonotic disease. Environment: humans are usually accidental end-host in zoonotic disease. Signs- nervous system: virus lives in the nerves of animal, travels to salivary glands, becomes infectious, very broad signs, anything neurological. World-wide problem: canine rabies is a serious human health risk, role of vectors/ reservoirs. Pa: mainly raccoon bites, but also bat, cat, fox, skunk: prevention. Transmission: feces of infected animals oral: contaminated food chicken, eggs, byproduct treats. Signs: diarrhea, fever, stomach pains: if spreads beyond intestines, septicemia, arthritis. Transmission: direct contact with infected animal or contaminated environment: contact with contaminated environment.
