Document Summary

Biol 222 lecture 2 chromosomes and cellular reproduction. Chromosome one dna molecule and assorted proteins: found in the nucleus of most living cells, contains genetic information. Diploid a cell that has two sets of chromosomes. Haploid a cell that has only one set of chromosomes. Have anywhere from 2 to over 100 chromosomes. Chromosome size varies within the genome: ie. sex chromosomes are smaller than many autosomal chromosomes. Centromere where chromosome pairs connect: kinetochore attaches here. Kinetochore multi-protein complex that assembles around the centromere: keeps two sister chromatids together. Cohesin protein that holds sister chromatids together. Seperase enzyme that degrades cohesion: mitosis: degradation of cohesion during anaphase, meiosis i: degradation of cohesion allows separation of homologous pairs; cohesion still holds sister chromatids together at the centromere. Spindle fibers (a. k. a microtubules) attach to the kinetochore: pulls the chromatids to the cell poles during cell division. Telomeres chromosome ends: crossing over take place here.
