Document Summary

Introduction to kinetics: the collision theory of reactions, reaction profiles, reaction rates. Reminder: extra credit initial learning assessment due at 11:59 pm sun 1/24, ta office hours and la sessions start on monday 1/25. Schedule and zoom link are posted in ebook help available page: please bring data sheet, periodic table, calculator, and paper or electronic copies of lecture notes to every lecture, hw1 is due @11:55 pm edt wednesday 1/27. Chemical kinetics overview: reaction profiles, dependence of reactants. A chemical reaction can occur only when the reactant molecules, atoms, or ions: collide in the proper orientation, collide with more than a minimum amount of kinetic energy (activation energy, ea) Reactants must be in proper orientation to result in effective collision. Reactants must collide with a minimum amount of energy to initiate the reaction. Reaction profile describes the energy change for both the forward and reverse reaction.
