We are the only country without a law for maternity leave. In the 1970"s, attachment researchers suggested that more than 20 hours per week of non-parental care put babies at a risk of insecure attachments. In the 1990"s, it was proven that daycare could be beneficial, if the quality of care is high: by age 4 1/2, children in higher quality care have better academic and language skills. Quality time with parents is still necessary, especially for infants. Characteristics of friendships: voluntary, reciprocal, affectionate, similarity, stable, conflict: infancy. Babies notice other babies and kids very early in first year: babies watch and respond to cues and play. Babies are limited by communication and motor skills: toddler (1-2 years) Imitate each other; laughing is contagious, washing hands. Responsive to peers and develop friendships with certain children.
