Decasper and fifer (1980: importance of the journal science (top rated scientific journal) First figured out infants" natural sucking behavior. Intraversed interval (ibi) average pause in baby"s sucking behavior. Once researchers determined the ibi, they assigned the babies to two different groups. Must lengthen ibi to hear a recording of mom"s voice (longer pauses) Shorten ibi (shorter pauses) to hear a recording of a strange woman"s voice. Lengthen ibi to hear stranger"s: regardless of which group they were in, they did whatever was necessary to hear their mother"s voice. Showed a very strong preference for biological mother"s voice: strengths of the study = showed that this is not due to chance. First study to show us that infants can hear mom"s voice in the womb. How do you study it: animal models, premature infants, amniocentesis (how does the fetus respond to a needle in the womb?, touch most highly developed sense.
