Some dimensions of self-esteem contribute more to an adolescents" global self- esteem than others: physical self-esteem (most predictive of overall self-esteem, peer relationship self-esteem. Interestingly, adolescents self-report that their physical appearance is one of the least important contributors to how they feel about themselves. Gender differences in self-esteem: boys self-esteem > girls self-esteem. Academic success leads to improvements in how adolescents feel about themselves: reverse is not true. Erikson"s theoretical framework (1959, 1964, 1968: the establishment of a coherent sense of identity is the chief psychosocial crisis of adolescence. The adolescent"s identity crisis results from a mutual recognition between the young person and society. Key to resolution lies in social interactions (according to erikson) Identity diffusion: incoherent, disjointed, incomplete sense of self. Identity foreclosure: bypassing the period of exploration and experimentation. Negative identity: identities that are undesirable to parents or the community.
