Adolescent growth spurt: rapid acceleration in growth (height & weight, simultaneous release of growth hormones, thyroid hormones, and androgens. Average female growth spurt is 2 years earlier than the average male growth spurt. Closing of ends of long bones (epiphysis) Changes i body composition: end of puberty muscle-to-fat ratio. Rapid increase in body fat leads to body dissatisfaction among girls. Development of secondary sex characteristics: body fat/muscle proportion change, measured in boys and girls by tanner stages, changes include: Boys: fairly orderly sequence, capable of fathering child before they look like adults; opposite for girls. Girls: sequence less regular than boys, menarche typically occurs after other secondary sex characteristics: regular ovulation follows 2 years later, appear physically mature before they are actually capable of reproduction. No relation between age at which puberty begins and rate of pubertal development. Group differences in pubertal maturation: secular trend.
