Parent-adolescent relationships differ from family to family: bidirectional/reciprocal effects. Adolescents behavior, temperament, and personality elicit different types of parenting. Adolescents who differ in temperament are affected in different ways by the same parenting. Degree to which parent responds to child"s needs in an accepting, supportive manner: parental demandingness. Degree to which parent expects/demands mature, responsible behavior from child. Authoritative (best: demanding, but high responsiveness. Indulgent: low demand, high responsiveness, no discipline (helicopter) Authoritative parenting is less prevalent among black/asian/hispanic families than white families. Beneficial effects are found for all ethnic groups. Demanding and controlling parenting strategies more prevalent among ethnic minority than among white families: adverse effects are greater for white adolescents than for ethnic minorities, may carry benefits for ethnic minorities who live in dangerous areas. Adolescents who are permitted to assert own opinions within a family context that is secure and loving develop: higher self-esteem, more mature coping abilities.
