HD FS 258 Lecture Notes - Lecture 27: Effect Size, Control Arm, Null Hypothesis
Document Summary
Etiology: the study of the multiple causes of an adverse outcome. Toxins in the air: asthma in kids. Child maltreatment: we may define a cause to be an object followed by another, and where all the objects similar to the first, are followed by objects similar to the second. Or, in other words, where, if the first object had not been, the second never had existed. Ex: caused window to break by kicking the ball. Ex: window would not be broken if he did not kick the ball: using 5 senses. Group of people we think are relevant for study: eligible participants. Experimental: randomization enhances causal inference, prospective method, example: Quasi-experimental research: little or no control over causal variable. Taking people who have headaches, treating them, and following frequency of headaches after treatment: better method. Term developed in clinical trials research: presence of the intervention in the control arm.
