Transition form: family of origin to a newly created family, single to married in the eyes of everyone, self to a shared marital identity, individuals now must consider spouse when: Dealing with parents: individuals must figure out how to balance togetherness without sacrificing one"s autonomy and identity. Closeness vs. distance: difficult because flexibility and adaptability of individualized marriages means everything is negotiable, challenge 3: working out who does what . Husband: bread-winner, outside tasks, made important decisions. Wife: in charge of household, raise children, make important decisions within family and home. Determining a fair and equitable division of labor (and decision-making rules) requires: open communication, bargaining skills, recognition that how your parents did things is not necessarily best for your marriage. Research is mixed: changes with marriage: Some evidence of shift to more traditional division of labor with marriage.
